Daily itinerary 10 days
walking tour WEST CRETE
Day 1. We meet at Heraklion airport at 18.00 hrs.
Transfer to
Exopoli, a village close to Georgioupolis, to our first hotel.
Day 2. A walk in the area of the villages of Argimouri, Likotinarea, Selia and Exopoli. The route offers wide views of the Cretan sea and the White Mountains (LEFKA HORI).
Time for a swim in the freshwater lake of Kournas.
Day 3. We start with a walk in the area of Gavalochori.
There's an interesting folk museum with old tools and pottery.
In varied surroundings, partly forested, we walk over field roads and old footpaths and through the villages of Xero Sterni and Douliana.
After the walk we drive to
Kissamos, our next place to stay.
Day 4. Today we'll walk partly on an upland plain with spectacular views and after that through a magnificent gorge with towering cliffs in the Sirikari area and the ancient Dorian fortress of Polirinia.
We also visit the ruins of this old city.
Day 5. On our way to our next hotel in
Paleochora, we take a walk from the village of Mouri to Katsomatados.
First we walk among olive groves and then we climb up a gorge followed by a descent with wide views of the surrounding mountains.
Day 6. A day of rest, with the options of either a short walk along a part of the southcoast to Elafonissi or -if the weather permits- a boat tour to this island.
Day 7. A walk from the village of Spaniakos to Azogires and Anidri. The route leads over sheeptrails, old footpaths and fieldroads with magnificent views of nearby valleys and the Libyan see. In Azogires we pay a visit to a local museum. Energy to spare? From Anidri it is possible to walk through a short gorge to the sea.
Day 8. Departure from Paleochora. After a drive to the village of Epanochori we begin our walk near to the entrance of the Irini gorge. First we walk uphill over a centuries old footpath "the king's road", indeed a royal experience! The return to our minibusses leads us through the very impressive Figou gorge and through a part of the Irini gorge. We arrive in
Omalos, our next resort.
Day 9. An early rise to climb the Gingilos, up from 1200 to 2100 m.
Magnificent views will be our reward!
If you don't want to go sky high, there are two possible alternatives this day. Either a walk through very varied mountainous scenery with colourful rocks and vegatation, or a descent through the famous, but rather frequented Samaria gorge. In the afternoon transfer to our last hotel, in the neighbourhood of
Rethymnon.
Day 10. After breakfast transfer to airport Heraklion.
