. Arrival at Heraklion airport, at the latest at 18.00 hours.
We drive by minibus to our first hotel in Arolithos
, 15 km southwest of Heraklion.
Arolithos is a hotel with the character of a traditional village and a lively village square.
. The walk today starts close to Archanes
, a village in the best known wine area of Crete.
First we visit the archaeological museum, and later we pass the excavations at Archanes, mostly graves from the Minoan time.
Our walk leads us around Mount Youchtas
, symbol of the sleeping Zeus.
Transfer our next hotel in Zaros
, a mountain village at an altitude of 430 metres at the foot of Mount Ida.
. Today we start our walk at the hotel, passing an artificial lake where trout are bred. Then the path climbs up into the Rouvas gorge
, crossing the river many times till we arrive in the green and beautiful valley of the Agios Ioannis chapel.
Lots of shade and maybe a bit wet in certain places!
. We move to Agia Galini
First we visit the monastery of Vrondisi
, well-known for its beautiful icons. Then we head for the Voriza gorge, where we will walk up most of its length and down again.
In the afternoon we will travel south to our next hotel.
. We drive to the village of Melambes today, where our circular walk starts in the Bouvala
mountains. We follow a high mountain ridge with spectacular views of the south coast and the Paximadi islands.
. Transfer to Spili
The walk today is through the Platanos gorge
. A lovely, shady walk, with maybe with some water to go through and some clambering to be done!
. A day off.
There is an option to do a walk which starts at the high plateau of Gious Kampous
. First we go uphill, cross-country, and then following tracks and old footpaths we descend to Gerakari, situated in the Amari valley. After lunch we make a loop around the village and walk gradually up again to the plateau.
. Today we start our walk in the village of Mixorouma.
On our way we pass several Byzantine churches, some of them with frescoes. Splendid views over the Kourtaliotiko gorge
Passing the village of Mourne, we return to Spili on foot and later on we drive to Panormo
, a village at the north coast of Crete.
. Today the highlight of our trip: climbing Mount Psiloritis
We drive first to the village of Livadia and then another 15 km to the mountain refuge of EOS (greek mountaineers club) at 1400 m. From here we start our climb to the summit of the Psiloritis, at 2456m it's the highest peak of Crete!
. After breakfast it is time to say goodbye and leave for the airport in Heraklion or to Rethymno.
